When thinking about whether food can prevent cancer, or any other disease for that matter, it's instructive to examine how we deal with illness.

I think it would be fair to say that most of us living in a western culture face daily challenges to stay well. You only have to take a look at the content labels of much that we buy as food, to realize that we face an uphill battle if we want to avoid serious illness.

And yet, look around you. It would be hard not to cave in to the notion that you might succumb to the many maladies that plague our westernized society, cancer, obesity, diabetes, arthritis. The evidence is there, staring us straight in the face. Too many people are falling off the track.

And yet, if truth be known, this should not be happening. Your body is the most amazing machine capable of healing itself, of staying well, yes right into your twilight years.

But it's not happening, is it? We have drugs to 'cure' almost every disease that man has encountered, but hey, they clearly are not working. They will often mask the symptom, but they are certainly healing at the causal level.

And that is what is worrying about the traditional, allopathic medical approach. What should really be happening when you visit a doctor is for the physician to examine your lifestyle in order to assess the reason as to why your body is breaking down.

Let's look at it this way. If you fall and graze your knee, what would be your expectation? That it would bleed forever? That the pain would never go away? That you will be permanently scarred? Absolutely not! You KNOW that it is going to get better. Intellectually, and from experience, you know that the process of healing has already begun.

Now, if you were to leave that scar uncleaned and unwashed, the chances are that infection would set in. Then you would be in trouble. And if you ignored that infection, then complications might follow.

So is there any difference intellectually between that little injury compared to a more serious one like heart disease, cancer, or obesity? Could you for instance, believe your body's healing capabilities and then make lifestyle changes to effect that healing?

This is where following an alkaline diet comes in. If, right now, you are suffering from a serious lifestyle disease, there's a good chance that your day-to-day eating patterns have been far from optimal.

Our traditional western-style diet has been one that is high in saturated fats, high in sugars, dairy products, caffeine, convenience foods, and possibly too much alcohol. This way of living is a breeding ground for disease, for an overly-acidic body, and this acidity permeates to every cell in our beings.
It is when our cellular health is under attack that diseases such as cancer, heart disease, fatigue, premature aging, and obesity take their hold. In truth, the diseases have often been there long before detection.

And the remedy? Well, it's not through drugs. It's not in chemotherapy. The quick-fix solution simply doesn't work. If it did we would all be on the pathway to wellness, wouldn't we? Many people find this lifestyle change a challenge because it does require effort. The obvious foods to leave out of your diet are those that acidify in your system, things like:

  • Meats
  • Dairy products
  • Caffeine
  • White flours
  • Bad fats

For inclusion into your alkaline diet you should concentrate on a myriad of fresh, preferable organic, vegetables. In simple terms, making the switch to a huge variety of fresh vegetables will be the kick-start on your road to alkalinity and wellness. Having many of them in exciting salads when they are clearly live is the way to go.

Concentrating on low-sugar fruits such as lemons, oranges, tomato and avocado is better that having too many high-sugar fruits. Though not forbidden, they should be consumed less often.
